SUBSTANCE Ketotifen

Ketotifen is an effective antiallergic and asthma preventative medication, often used in combination with other treatments to manage mild allergic asthma, particularly in children. As a powerful antihistamine, ketotifen works by reducing the body's sensitivity to allergens?substances that can provoke allergic reactions and lead to sudden asthma attacks.

It's essential to discuss any uncertainties regarding your child's treatment with your doctor. Never discontinue this medication without professional guidance, and avoid giving it to anyone else, even if they exhibit similar symptoms, as it may be harmful.

Each white scored tablet, branded as "ZADITEN," contains 1 mg of ketotifen fumarate. Inactive ingredients include calcium hydrogen phosphate, magnesium stearate, and maize starch.

In addition, the strawberry-flavored syrup offers 1 mg of ketotifen fumarate per 5 mL. Other non-active ingredients consist of alcohol, citric acid, methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium phosphate, sorbitol solution, strawberry flavor, sucrose, and water.

Before initiating treatment with ketotifen, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, allergies, current medications, pregnancy, or breastfeeding status, as these factors may influence its use.

If you have diabetes, please note that the syrup contains 4 grams of carbohydrates per 5 mL. Rare instances of low blood cell counts have been reported in patients taking both antidiabetic medications and ketotifen, so consult your doctor if you have concerns.

Ketotifen may cause drowsiness. Parents should closely monitor children for any signs of drowsiness during the initial treatment phase and ensure they avoid potentially dangerous activities until the effects are clear.

Existing asthma treatments (like b2-agonists such as salbutamol, sodium cromoglycate, and corticosteroids like beclomethasone, budesonide, and fluticasone) should not be abruptly stopped when starting ketotifen. Always follow your physician's guidance.

Ketotifen may increase the risk of seizures, particularly in those with a seizure history. If you or your child have experienced seizures, consult your doctor to discuss how this medication may impact the condition and whether any special monitoring is necessary.

Ketotifen is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
