Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), also known as Somatomedin C, is a vital hormone closely related to insulin. It plays a pivotal role in promoting growth during childhood and exerts anabolic effects in adults.
As one of the key growth factors necessary for healthy human development, IGF-1 is primarily synthesized in the liver and various other tissues throughout the body.
IGF-1 comprises 70 amino acids, featuring an A and B chain linked by disulfide bonds, along with a C peptide region consisting of 12 amino acids.
USAGEIGF-1 is essential for normal bone and tissue growth and development. It is also effective in lowering blood glucose levels and targets fat cells to enhance fat utilization, thereby increasing lean body mass while reducing fat. These benefits are particularly attractive to athletes and bodybuilders. Elevated levels of IGF-1 promote weight gain through an increase in lean body mass rather than fat accumulation.
This remarkable hormone is favored by bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts alike, as it accelerates recovery after workouts and boosts energy levels during exercise.
IGF-1 injections are often prescribed for both children and adults with growth hormone deficiencies. It contains crucial amino acids that support children facing slow growth and assist adults with deficiencies.
Research suggests that IGF-1?s anabolic effects may arise from reduced protein breakdown and enhanced protein synthesis in skeletal muscle, potentially due to its direct impact on muscle tissue, aiding in the healing of skin burns and other tissue irregularities.
MECHANISM OF ACTIONAs a naturally occurring hormone in human blood, IGF-1 primarily regulates the effects of growth hormone in the body. Its normal functions include promoting tissue and bone growth. IGF-1 is produced in multiple tissues in response to the presence of growth hormone in the bloodstream.
IGF-1 stimulates growth across the body, impacting nearly every cell type, especially those found in bones, cartilage, skeletal muscles, the liver, kidneys, nerves, skin, and lungs. Beyond its insulin-like characteristics, IGF-1 also plays a role in managing cellular DNA synthesis.
ADMINISTRATIONIGF-1 is typically administered via subcutaneous injection into a fleshy area, such as the abdomen. It can also be injected intramuscularly.
MODE OF ADMINISTRATION:Before administering IGF-1, ensure the use of a clean and sterile syringe.
- Hold the IGF-1 vial upright and insert the syringe through the center of the cap.
- Pull the plunger until the desired amount (refer to the ?Dosage? section below) is in the syringe, then carefully remove it.
- Clean the skin at the injection site with alcohol.
- Pinch the skin around the injection area, leaving about 2 cm of space on each side.
- Position the syringe at a 90-degree angle to the skin and quickly insert it.
- Fully depress the plunger until the syringe is empty, then withdraw carefully.
For lean muscle growth and fat loss:
DOSAGE AMOUNT:- Men: 40 mcg - 50 mcg daily
- Women: 10 mcg - 20 mcg daily
IGF-1 should not be injected more than twice a day. A typical IGF-1 dosage cycle lasts between 2 and 12 weeks. Those prescribed IGF-1 for growth deficiencies, including children and adults, should consult their healthcare provider for the right dosing.
SIDE EFFECTSPossible side effects of IGF-1 can resemble those of other growth hormones, including excessive tissue growth (acromegaly) and potential harm to the joints, liver, and heart. Common side effects may include joint pain, muscle discomfort, headaches, and nausea. IGF-1 may also lower blood glucose levels, leading to hypoglycemia. Additionally, research has linked IGF-1 to an increased risk of specific cancers, including lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers.
