What is Bromocriptine (Parlodel)?
Parlodel, a medication containing bromocriptine, is primarily prescribed to treat hormonal imbalances associated with elevated prolactin levels in the bloodstream, a condition known as hyperprolactinemia. In women, it may result in irregular menstrual cycles, reduced libido, hot flashes, infertility, or unexpected lactation. Men may experience breast enlargement, decreased libido, reduced body and facial hair, and muscle loss. Additionally, Parlodel is indicated for issues related to prolactin-secreting brain tumors.
Furthermore, Parlodel can be administered alongside surgical or radiation treatments for acromegaly, a disorder caused by tumors in the pituitary gland that lead to excessive growth hormone production. It is also effective in alleviating symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, and impaired motor control.
What Should You Know About Parlodel?
Parlodel is not suitable for individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure, pregnancy-related hypertension (like eclampsia or preeclampsia), or those with a history of severe heart disease post-childbirth. If pregnancy occurs during treatment, consult your doctor immediately, as discontinuation may be necessary. Breastfeeding while on bromocriptine is not advised.
