Discover Strattera: Your Ally in Managing ADHD

What is Strattera?

Strattera is a trusted medication that harnesses the power of atomoxetine to effectively treat attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is suitable for:

  • Children aged six and older
  • Adolescents
  • Adults
  • Designed to be an integral part of a holistic treatment plan for ADHD, Strattera works best in conjunction with non-pharmaceutical approaches such as counseling and behavioral therapy. Note that it is not recommended for children under six, as its safety and efficacy in this age group have not been established.

For adults, Strattera is prescribed when ADHD symptoms significantly hinder daily life, including professional and social interactions, particularly if these symptoms were present during childhood.

    How Does Strattera Work?

Strattera enhances focus and reduces impulsivity by increasing noradrenaline levels in the brain?a natural chemical that regulates attention. As a non-stimulant medication, Strattera eliminates the risk of addiction, although users may need several weeks to experience noticeable symptom relief.

    Understanding ADHD

ADHD can present unique challenges for children and adolescents, including:

  • Inability to stay still
  • Difficulties in concentrating
  • These issues stem from neurobiological factors, not a lack of effort, and can lead to significant challenges in learning and behavior at home and school. Importantly, ADHD does not equate to lowered intelligence.

In adults, similar challenges persist, potentially affecting:

  • Work responsibilities
  • Personal relationships
  • Self-esteem
  • Educational goals
  • Important Precautions Before Using Strattera

Do NOT take Strattera if you:

  • Are allergic to atomoxetine or any components of this medication (see section 6 for details)
  • Have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like phenelzine in the last two weeks, as this combination can cause severe and potentially life-threatening side effects. You must wait at least 14 days after stopping Strattera before starting an MAOI.
  • Have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure)
  • Suffer from serious heart conditions that may worsen with increased heart rate or blood pressure, which Strattera can cause
  • Have experienced significant vascular issues, such as stroke or aneurysm
  • Have a pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor)
  • If any of these apply to you, refrain from using Strattera and consult your healthcare provider for guidance, as the medication may exacerbate these conditions.

    Warnings and Considerations

Both children and adults should heed the following warnings before using Strattera. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have:

  • Suicidal thoughts or tendencies
  • Cardiac issues, including heart defects or rapid heartbeat?Strattera has been linked to increased heart rates and rare instances of sudden death in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions
  • High blood pressure, as Strattera may elevate it further
  • Low blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness or fainting
  • Unusual fluctuations in blood pressure or heart rate
  • A history of cardiovascular issues or strokes
  • Liver dysfunction, which may require a lower dose
  • Psychotic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)
  • Episodes of mania or heightened agitation
  • Aggressive or hostile feelings
  • A previous history of seizures or epilepsy, as Strattera could increase seizure frequency
  • Mood swings or significant sadness
  • Uncontrolled, repetitive movements or vocalizations
  • Inform your healthcare provider if any of these apply to you before starting treatment, so they can monitor you appropriately, as Strattera may exacerbate these issues.

    Pre-Treatment Evaluations

Your physician will conduct various assessments to determine if Strattera is right for you, including:

  • Monitoring your blood pressure and heart rate before and during Strattera treatment
  • Tracking height and weight, particularly in children and teenagers throughout their treatment journey
  • Additionally, your doctor will discuss:

  • Any other medications you are currently using
  • Family history of sudden, unexplained deaths
  • Significant medical conditions (like heart issues) in you or your family
  • Providing comprehensive information will enable your doctor to tailor the best treatment plan for you. Your doctor may also recommend further medical evaluations before beginning Strattera.
