What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone class, designed to fight a wide range of bacterial infections. Prescribed for conditions such as skin infections, bone and joint infections, respiratory and sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and specific types of diarrhea, this medication is also effective in treating gonorrhea.
Furthermore, ciprofloxacin is used for individuals exposed to anthrax or certain types of plague, making it an essential tool in combating severe bacterial threats.
This antibiotic should only be used when safer alternatives are not effective.
It's important to note that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can lead to serious, potentially irreversible side effects, including tendon ruptures and nerve damage.
Important Safety Information
Ciprofloxacin can cause significant side effects, such as tendon problems, nerve damage, mood changes, or low blood sugar. If you experience symptoms like headache, irritability, numbness, confusion, or joint pain, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
In rare cases, ciprofloxacin may cause aortic damage, leading to severe bleeding. Seek emergency medical care if you experience intense chest, stomach, or back pain.
If you have a muscle disorder, such as myasthenia gravis, you may not be suitable for this antibiotic. Always inform your healthcare provider of your medical history.
Before Taking This Medication
Do not take ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if:
- You are currently taking tizanidine;
- You have allergies to other fluoroquinolones like gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, or moxifloxacin;
- You are on theophylline.
Ciprofloxacin can increase the risk of tendon swelling or tears, especially in the Achilles tendon. This can occur during treatment or even months after stopping the medication. Certain populations, including children, older adults, and those on steroids, may be at higher risk for these issues.
To ensure your safety, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:
- Tendon or joint issues;
- Circulatory problems, aneurysms, or artery hardening;
- Heart disease or high blood pressure;
- Genetic conditions like Marfan or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome;
- Diabetes;
- Muscle or nerve disorders;
- Kidney disease;
- Seizures or epilepsy;
- A head injury or brain tumor;
- Long QT syndrome in you or a family member;
- Low potassium levels (hypokalemia).
Consult your doctor before administering this medication to a child. The effects on unborn babies are not fully understood, so inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant. Avoid breastfeeding while on ciprofloxacin.
How to Take Ciprofloxacin
Take ciprofloxacin precisely as directed by your doctor. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and any medication guides provided.
This antibiotic can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow extended-release tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them.
