Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone family (pronounced flor-o-KWIN-o-lone) and is designed to combat a variety of bacterial infections within the body. This medication is commonly prescribed for skin infections, respiratory or sinus infections, urinary tract infections, as well as infections of the bones and joints. It also proves effective in treating certain types of diarrhea and gonorrhea.
In addition, Ciprofloxacin is utilized for those who may have been exposed to anthrax or specific forms of the plague.
It?s crucial to note that Ciprofloxacin should only be used for infections that cannot be effectively treated with safer alternatives.
While fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including Ciprofloxacin, are effective, they may also lead to serious and potentially irreversible side effects, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important InformationBe aware that Ciprofloxacin may cause severe side effects, including tendon problems, nerve injuries, significant mood or behavior changes, and low blood sugar levels.
If you experience symptoms like headaches, irritability, hunger, numbness, tingling, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory issues, suicidal thoughts, or sudden joint pain, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
In rare cases, this medication can result in aortic damage, leading to severe bleeding or even death. Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience intense and ongoing chest, abdomen, or back pain.
Individuals with muscle disorders should inform their doctor, especially those with a history of myasthenia gravis, as they may not be suitable candidates for Ciprofloxacin.
Before Taking This MedicationDo not take Ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if you:
- Are currently using tizanidine
- Have allergies to other fluoroquinolones (e.g., gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin)
- Are taking theophylline
Ciprofloxacin has been linked to tendon swelling or tearing, particularly in the Achilles tendon, which can occur during treatment or months after stopping the medication. Those at heightened risk include children, older adults, steroid users, and organ transplant recipients.
