What is Amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is a powerful antibiotic from the penicillin family, designed to combat a variety of bacterial infections. This medication is commonly prescribed for conditions such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections affecting the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
In specific cases, amoxicillin is combined with another antibiotic, clarithromycin (Biaxin), to effectively treat stomach ulcers induced by Helicobacter pylori. This duo may also be paired with a medication that reduces stomach acid.
Important Information
While taking amoxicillin, be aware that it can affect the efficacy of birth control pills. Consult your healthcare provider about alternative non-hormonal contraceptive methods, like condoms or diaphragms, to prevent unintended pregnancy. Always complete your prescribed treatment, even if you start feeling better, as this antibiotic does not target viral infections like the common cold or flu. Sharing this medication with others is not advisable, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.
Using antibiotics may lead to diarrhea, which can occur during treatment or even after stopping the medication. If you experience severe or bloody diarrhea, discontinue use and contact your healthcare professional. Avoid anti-diarrheal medications unless directed by your doctor.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not use amoxicillin if you have a known allergy to any penicillin antibiotics, such as ampicillin or penicillin itself.
To ensure amoxicillin is suitable for you, disclose any of the following to your healthcare provider: - Asthma - Liver or kidney disease - Mononucleosis (often referred to as "mono") - A history of antibiotic-related diarrhea - Any food or drug allergies
While amoxicillin is generally safe during pregnancy, it?s important to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive while undergoing treatment.
How Should I Take Amoxicillin?
Follow your physician's instructions precisely when taking amoxicillin. Adhere to all guidelines on your prescription label without altering the dosage or frequency without medical advice.
For optimal results, take this medication consistently at the same time each day. The Moxatag brand should be taken with food or within one hour after a meal. Other formulations may have different instructions, so check your medication label carefully.
If you have liquid amoxicillin, shake it well before measuring out a dose according to the label's directions. Use the dosing syringe or a specialized measuring spoon or cup for accuracy. You can take the liquid directly or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale?consume the entire mixture immediately and do not save any for later.
Chew the chewable tablet thoroughly before swallowing, and avoid crushing, chewing, or breaking extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.
If you are on long-term amoxicillin therapy, your doctor may recommend regular blood tests and monitoring of kidney and liver functions. When using amoxicillin with clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for ulcer treatment, strictly adhere to all medication guidelines and consult your doctor before making any adjustments to your dosage or schedule.
Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed. Symptoms may improve before the infection is entirely cleared, and missed doses can increase the risk of antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember, amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or common cold.
Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms. This antibiotic may yield unusual results in certain medical tests, so inform your healthcare provider that you are taking amoxicillin.
Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
