Erythropoietin
Darbepoetin alfa is a powerful agent that stimulates erythropoiesis, mirroring the function of natural erythropoietin. This innovative formulation features five N-linked carbohydrate chains, compared to the three found in natural and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). These extra sugar chains, while structurally similar to those in the natural hormone, enhance darbepoetin alfa's stability and prolong its half-life, leading to increased efficacy in the body. Importantly, despite these enhancements, darbepoetin alfa retains a highly specific interaction with the erythropoietin receptor.
