Erythropoietin
Darbepoetin alfa enhances red blood cell production through a mechanism akin to that of the body's natural erythropoietin. Unlike the natural hormone and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), which are characterized by three N-linked carbohydrate chains, darbepoetin alfa boasts five. This increased carbohydrate content does not alter the molecular structure compared to the endogenous hormone but significantly extends the half-life of darbepoetin alfa. As a result, it exhibits enhanced in vivo activity. Importantly, despite these structural modifications, darbepoetin alfa retains a highly specific affinity for the erythropoietin receptor.
As a key growth factor, erythropoietin primarily stimulates the production of red blood cells and is also present on various tumor cell surfaces.
